Concern for the environment and finding positive ways to help the environment where possible is the goal of the Roost Recycling program. Keeping shoes out landfills is one way of doing that. It can take up to 1,000 years for a midsole to break down in landfill environments.

Runners Roost has two main ways to keep shoes out of landfills:
    1. Donate shoes that still have like to great causes, like the Denver Rescue Mission.
    2. Recycle shoes via programs like Nike’s Reuse‐A‐Shoe program...

Denver the New Addition in Rockn'Roll Marathon 2009 Schedules

By Madhuri Dey

Oct 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Denver Marathon has officially been included in the Rock n’ Roll Marathon Series in it’s list of races that are scheduled to be held next year, in the fall of 2010, as per an announcement made by the Competition Group.

Peter Englehart, President and CEO of Competition Group, sounded elated about the choice. He explained that Denver was chosen on account of it’s convenient combination of gorgeous scenic beauty and smooth racing tracks. Added reasons were the fact that Denver experiences the longest summer months, more than three hundred days and also the largest number of runners per capita. It is, in fact, considered one of the healthiest cities in the world.

It is anticipated that the inclusion of the Denver Marathon will bring in more participants from around the world, given that the city is one of the best places for races. The breathtaking scenic beauty and it’s own vibrant culture is bound to add volumes to the Marathon’s rock and roll format. The city is also well positioned to accommodate the huge influx of people that will obviously come to Denver during this period, both to take part in the event and as a spectator. The 2010 event will take place in the existing race track in Denver that starts at the State Capitol and winds it’s way past many prominent buildings in the city like the Art Museum, the Public Library and Union Station ads well as the Washington and Cheesman Parks.

It is hoped that the Denver Marathon will give the city and the country’s economy a huge boost. Speculations are on that the tourism industry will gain a huge profit from this event.

2009 Bolder Boulder - A Record Breaker

Record breaker by Laura Snider
The cool weather didn’t just help the pros. The pleasant temps held steady for all of the tens of thousands of people running in the Citizens’ Race.

The men’s winner, Kenyan Simon Cheprot, broke the course record by crossing the finish line in less than 30 minutes. Cheprot came in at 29.19 minutes, beating the old time of 30.22 minutes.

Scottish runner Freya Murray won the women’s citizens’ race with a time of 34.23 minutes.

The Citizens’ Race stretched on for hours, creating a solid sea of (mostly) running feet. The feet belonged to elementary school kids, to grandparents, to at least two different Elvis impersonators and an endless line of striped knee-sock wearing teenagers.

Some of the feet didn’t run at all. Some walked. Some skipped. Some shuffled back and forth in an odd gyroscopic dance that required a chicken-strut type of neck movement in order to keep a hula hoop spinning for 10 kilometers.

And some hopped — a lot. Several chains of leapfroggers hopped in towards the end, some members barely able to make a proper frog-hop by in the final stretch.

Eight of the feet belonged to the Shanley family from Littleton. James, 11, and Stuart, 12, joined their big brother John, 14, and their dad — both Bolder Boulder alumni — to run the race for the first time.

“It was harder than I thought it would be, “ James said. “Especially the hills.” Even so, the whole family plans to be back to run again next year.

First-timers win at Colfax

An artice from DenverPost.com/Sports:

Utrata was overcome with disbelief after claiming the women's title in the first marathon she attempted. "I felt like I was dragging," said Utrata, 27. "Oh, my gosh!"

Utrata, who works at the Englewood Rec Center, finished with an unofficial time of 3 hours, 13 minutes, 48 seconds. "I knew it was a small race I could place in, but winning was never in the picture," Utrata said. "It's awesome. It's so awesome!"

The men's race also went to a first-time marathoner with former Ohio Wesleyan runner Matt Kempton winning in 2:41:00.

Kempton moved to Colorado after graduation, believing he underachieved as a collegiate runner and hoping altitude training would help him reach his potential. Kempton's goal is to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Trials.

The trials will have considerably more atmosphere than what Colfax has to offer, but Kempton was impressed.

"This is a really great race," said Kempton, 24. "I appreciate all the people along the course who were helping us out there. People would say really amazing things, just really motivational."

Kempton took the lead around the 22-mile mark from Miguel Cazares. In the inaugural Colfax Marathon three years ago, Cazares ran his first marathon at age 19 and placed third. This year his goal was to win — and set a course record...Read More...

Records fall in windy meet - by Brian Forbes

The pessimists would have complained about the wind Saturday at the annual Runners Roost Invite at Mullen High School, while the optimists hoped it would calm down. The realists — in the words of writer William Arthur Ward — adjusted their sails.

"It was really windy, so I had to really fight hard on this one," said Sierra senior Samantha Thompson, who was named the standout female athlete at the multiclassification meet, which featured much of the state's top talent. Thompson won the 800 meters with a meet record of 2 minutes, 15.19 seconds and placed second in the 1,600, behind Highlands Ranch sophomore Eleanor Fulton.

but Fulton found another gear and set a meet record of 4:57.08. In the 800, Thompson strode past Mullen's Venessa Fabrizio in the final 100 meters. "I was really proud of myself to come out here, do the best that I can and to really push myself," Thompson said. ...Read more at www.denverpost.com/preps/ci_12124903
